Rory McIlroy’s confident demeanor ahead of this week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst may be further explained by the disclosure that the divorce petition he filed in a Florida court last month has been voluntarily dismissed.
McIlroy has reconciled with his wife of seven years, Erica, which will be a big encouragement for the golfer’s mental state.
Just before the PGA Championship, shocking news broke that world No. 2 McIlroy was getting divorced. But court documents filed in Florida on Tuesday showed the case was dismissed at the request of the parties. McIlroy was visibly upbeat as he spoke to reporters in Pinehurst earlier in the day.
When interviewed by the Guardian about the frenzy of speculation surrounding his divorce and his status at the past two major championships, McIlroy responded: “There have been some rumours circulating recently about my personal life which is unfortunate. It would be foolish to react to every single rumour.”
“Over the past few weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is together as a family. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and are looking forward to a new beginning.”
McIlroy arrived in North Carolina hoping to win his fifth major championship and his first since August 2014. The Northern Irishman will be paired with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele in the first and second rounds.
“I’m really proud of my accomplishments and all that I’ve achieved over the last 15 years, whether it be season titles, individual tournaments or majors,” McIlroy said.
“Obviously, it’s been a long time coming to win my fifth major, but I’m more confident than ever that I’m close, I’m closer than I’ve ever been.”
