Earlier this week, a pro-Palestinian male protester was caught on video on a crowded New York City subway car yelling at Zionists to identify themselves: “Raise your hands if you’re a Zionist! Now’s your chance to get out!”
WABC-TV reported. Police are searching for a man who yelled the phrase during a call-and-response sing-along at the 14th Street Union Square subway station on Monday, which you can watch on video. here.
“Threatening New Yorkers based on their faith is not only despicable, it is illegal and will not be tolerated.”
The man then said, “OK, there are no Zionists, we’re OK.” According to WABC, the subway was stopped and the doors of the car were open when the slogan was chanted.
WABC reported that witnesses have come forward, and the NYPD is calling on other passengers who felt threatened while on subway cars to come forward as well. A police source told ABC News that detectives plan to file charges of attempted extortion.
WABC reported that “apparent protesters” had gathered above ground in Union Square minutes before the video of the chanting on the subway was captured.
“Mayor [Eric] Mayor Adams has made it clear that New York City will always defend free speech, but we will never allow our city to descend into lawlessness,” a City Hall spokesperson told WABC. “Threatening New Yorkers based on their faith is not only vile, it is illegal and will not be tolerated. Anyone with information about those responsible for this unlawful activity should contact the NYPD immediately.”
Additionally, New York City officials are considering ways to make wearing masks at protests illegal again, the outlet reported, adding that the city’s anti-mask laws date back nearly 200 years and were in place during the time of Ku Klux Klan protests. WABC reported that the anti-mask law was repealed in 2020 during pandemic-era rallies against police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
