Trump ally rips German chancellor for comments supporting Biden

A former Defense Department official in the Trump administration on Sunday criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after he praised President Biden as Europe prepares for November elections.

Scholz He told Politico On Saturday, he said Biden is likely to win because he “knows exactly what he’s doing,” praising his attitude and record on economic policy.

Elbridge Colby, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense, called the comments “highly inappropriate.”

“I think it’s best not to interfere in each other’s elections,” he says. I have written on social media platform X. “But in any case, what message should such comments send to Republicans about the current Berlin government?”

Scholz also praised Biden for his support for NATO while President Trump has threatened to withdraw the U.S. from the important, decades-old alliance. He described the question of who would win the November election as “a bit strange,” but said Biden is likely to win.

“I wonder [Scholz] “He really knows what he’s talking about in the American context,” Colby said, “and I think it’s totally inappropriate to comment on American politics and elections.”

Colby is one of the leading candidates to become national security adviser in the Trump administration and has privately argued for the U.S. to be more aggressive in deterring China while playing a less active role in other overseas conflicts, including in Ukraine.

Scholz’s comments came at the Group of Seven summit in Italy, where President Biden met with Ukraine’s closest allies to discuss economic and foreign policy. The group announced on Thursday that it would provide $50 billion in loans to Ukraine, funded by frozen Russian assets.
