But what exactly are these “microcars”?

They’re essentially small electric cars designed to get around town – in Europe they’re called quads, and in the US they fall into the Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) category.

Eli Zero is small but mighty

Despite its small size, the Eli Zero packs a punch. Thanks to an 8 kWh battery pack, it can go 60 miles on a single charge, and with a 3.2 kW onboard charger, it can be charged up in just under three hours at a 240V station. Of course, with a top speed of 25 mph, it’s not exactly a speed freak, but it does have all the usual automotive amenities, including air conditioning, keyless entry, and the optional Sony infotainment system.

Eli Zero is a niche success story

It’s a fairly niche market; most new automakers in this space struggle to sell more than a few dozen cars. But Eli Zero has already found success in Europe and French Polynesia, with hundreds on the streets (though in the grand scheme of things, “a few hundred” is still niche, I think).

The US version has been upgraded to meet federal safety regulations for LSVs, and can be driven on public roads just like a regular car. Well, in a way, it’s limited to roads with a top speed of 35 mph. But to be honest, that covers most city streets.
