Pat McAfee in ESPN ‘College GameDay’ limbo as 2024 season looms

It’s unclear whether Pat McAfee will appear on ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

McAfee has stirred controversy with his eccentric style on Saturday morning shows for the past two years, but he has yet to sign a contract to host ESPN’s weekly college football roadshow next season. This was reported by The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand. Tuesday.

McAfee, 37, has a separate deal with ESPN that allows the network to air his “Pat McAfee Show” Monday through Friday.

College GameDay also features stars such as Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard and former Alabama player Nick Saban, but fans of the show have been divided over McAfee’s inclusion.

He was responding to a poll conducted by The Athletic in October that revealed 48.9 percent of respondents did not like McAfee’s appearance on the show.

“I’ve heard you all loud and clear from the beginning of my work at GameDay. That’s why I [re-signed] “I signed with a legendary program,” McAfee wrote to X at the time. “I’m not cut out for a certain segment of the audience, and ‘prestigious’ college football fans are certainly one of them.”

McAfee, who is also a commentator on WWE’s “Monday Night Raw,” announced he would be returning to “College GameDay” in December.

That same month, Herbstreit told McAfee on his show that he would quit “College GameDay” if McAfee stopped appearing on the show.

“If you’re going to quit College GameDay, I’m going to quit with you,” Herbstreit said. “I’m really quitting. I’m serious.”

The 2024 college football season will begin with “Week 0” on Aug. 24, featuring Florida State playing Georgia Tech.

The “College GameDay” X account announced last month that the show would air the Week 1 primetime game between Notre Dame and Texas A&M on Aug. 31 on College Station, opting not to air the Clemson-Georgia game starting with the game.
