The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have officially approved plans for an “attack on Lebanon” against Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed terrorist organization that has been shelling northern Israel since October and illegally occupying southern Lebanon.
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement:
Today (Tuesday), Northern Command Commander Maj. Gen. Oli Gordin and Chief of Operations (J3) Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk approved the operation plan and conducted a joint situation assessment in Northern Command.
As part of the situation assessment, operational plans for the offensive in Lebanon were approved and reviewed, and a decision was made to continuously strengthen the readiness of forces in the field.
Israel has been warning for weeks that war was possible if Hezbollah did not stop its attacks, and President Joe Biden sent special envoy Amos Hochstein to Israel and Lebanon this week in an attempt to ease tensions but appeared to fail.
On Tuesday, Hezbollah release Footage was released purporting to show a spy drone evading Israeli defenses and capturing images of potential targets in northern Israel, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a rare direct message calling on the Biden administration to end the arms and ammunition hold. (President Joe Biden blocked some arms shipments in May, though the White House said it did not know what the prime minister’s intentions were.)
Israel forcibly evacuated about 60,000 residents of northern border towns in October, most of whom remain internally displaced. As many as 100,000 IDF soldiers are stationed along Israel’s northern border, and IDF special forces are active inside Lebanon, likely scouting and destroying defenses in preparation for a larger attack.
