Cliff-walking riders appear on the horizon. Their mission is serious, and you can tell by the pace they’re going through. The soundtrack is ominous, and the font in the opening credits is an elaborate Western rather than the flashy, gaudy lettering of the time, meaning their journey is bound to be dark. Then you blink, and they’re laughing along with the crowds of Dodge City.
Like most of Anthony Mann’s work, “Winchester ’73” depicts an impressive variety of human behavior.
Lynn McAdam (Jimmy Stewart) is searching for something, or something.One.
For reasons we don’t know, he won’t stop until the violence has reached its limit. Luckily, his partner in crime, high-spade Frankie Wilson (Millard Mitchell), is fun and upbeat, but can be ruthless when necessary.
The chase leads the two lone riders to Dodge City on the 100th anniversary of America’s founding and the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
As part of the celebrations, the town will host a shooting contest with a rifle as the prize, and the ceremony will be master of ceremonies performed by the legendary Wyatt Earp.
The title card at the beginning of the film reads:
“This is the story of the Winchester Model 1873 rifle: ‘The Gun That Conquered the West.’ For cattlemen, outlaws, policemen and soldiers, the Winchester ’73 was a prized possession.”
The best of these Western titles are bold, mysterious, clever, and above all, thematic: In Stagecoach, the human drama is set on a stagecoach; The Searchers is about the people who search.
On the surface, “Winchester ’73” is about the famous Winchester ’73 gun that conquered the West. Specifically, it’s about the Model 1873 “One of OneThousand” rifle that was awarded to the winner of a shooting contest held on July 4, 1876 in Dodge City, Kansas.

The story is simple: two men are in a conflict that can only end in death, and neither is willing to surrender.
At first glance, the two rivals seem like typical brothers. But gradually we discover that one is law-abiding and the other is an outlaw. The chase takes us to the frontier, all the while with our prized gun following the same trajectory and getting caught up in different wild scenarios.
The whirlwind begins when Lynn and Frankie encounter an enemy hiding under the alias Dutch Henry Brown, and naturally, this spills over into the shooting competition.
I don’t want to spoil the premise, because it’s a great movie, but suffice to say that the movie is set in the Wild West and stars Rock Hudson as an Indian chief.
McAdam said his pal Frankie Wilson told him, “You’re Have fun Murder: “A man has something to do, so he does it.”
Are the Winchesters some kind of crazy force that incites the resulting violence?

What makes a Winchester a Winchester?
Thanks to some savvy PR from the Winchester Company, the Winchester Model 1873 rifle became known as “the gun that won the West.” To be clear, this title is well deserved.
The lever action is tight and quick, and the tube magazine that feeds the barrel holds 15 rounds. These brass-framed repeaters are fun to shoot, accurate, versatile and lightweight.

The Model 1873 is associated with such iconic figures of the era as Billy the Kid, Theodore Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill Cody.
according to American riflemanProduction of the Winchester 1873 continued until 1923. At that time, Winchester sold approximately 720,000 Model 1873s, originally priced at around $50 (equivalent to about $1,300 in today’s money).
In 1875, Winchester introduced the more expensive and finely crafted “One of One Thousand” Model 1873. This rifle was limited to only 136 pieces.
The higher grade “One of One Hundred” is even rarer, with fewer than 10 in circulation.
Anthony Mann reports that Jimmy Stewart was committed to becoming an expert with the Winchester, and that Stewart “was a sight to behold walking down the street with a Winchester rifle crammed under his arm, and he was a very good shooter. He practiced so hard his knuckles were worn down from practice.”

Jimmy Stewart had a lifelong love of building model airplanes, a hobby he shared with his best friend Henry Fonda. As a boy, he had a passion for airplanes.
He wanted to be a Navy pilot, but instead went to Princeton University, where he met Fonda. The two went to New York together to try to land a Broadway role, after which Fonda moved to Hollywood. Stewart later joined him. He greeted Fonda with a model airplane he was building.
In Los Angeles, Stewart received flight training and logged more than 300 hours in the cockpit of a Stinson Voyager.
He was among the first group of Americans drafted in the fall of 1940. He nearly missed out because he was underweight. He was rejected. This infuriated him so much that he ate like a pig until he reached the minimum weight.
In 1941, one month after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor, Stewart, 32, formally enlisted in the Army, becoming the first Hollywood celebrity to do so. But he wasn’t the first: His father fought in the Spanish-American War and both of his grandfathers fought in the Civil War. Stewart’s family can trace their lineage back to the American Revolutionary War.
Nine months later, 353 Japanese planes and bombers attacked Pearl Harbor.
In 1943, he commanded a B-24 Liberator squadron in the European theater, where he flew 20 combat missions.
