White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday doubled down on the “cheap fake” videos of President Biden circulating online, arguing there is “so much misinformation” being circulated by conservatives.
“This is deeply offensive to our viewers, so I believe we have to condemn it. We’ve called it a cheap fake. This is what the media and fact checkers have called it directly. So we’re going to be very clear on that as well. And from our position, we’re going to condemn it from our position,” Jean-Pierre told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Tuesday.
Wallace asked Jean-Pierre about video footage of Biden at various events in recent weeks, including one in which he turns his back on world leaders to address parachutists at a Normandy landings anniversary event in France, and another in which he is escorted offstage by former President Barack Obama at a recent fundraiser.
“I think there’s a lot of misinformation and disinformation, as we’ve been talking about. You talked about the video of the president wandering around. That’s not true, right? The president wasn’t wandering. He was talking to a parachutist who was right in front of him. And we see that the Republicans have really manipulated what the American people are saying and what they’re watching,” Jean-Pierre continued.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Jean-Pierre called the video a “deepfake.”
“Instead of talking about the president’s accomplishments in office — his legislative victories, what he’s accomplished for Americans across the country — we’re seeing these deepfakes and manipulated videos, and again, this is being done with bad intentions,” she said.
According to the New York PostShe later said she did not mean to use the word “deepfake” and meant “a cheap fake.”
According to Merriam-Webster, a deepfake is “an image or recording that has been convincingly altered or manipulated to make it appear that someone did or said something that was not actually done or said.”
Wallace, an ardent Biden supporter, also asked about the upcoming debates and how Biden is preparing.
“I’m going to be really mindful because the debates are part of what the campaign is pushing and leading, so as a federal employee I have to be careful not to talk about that directly,” Jean-Pierre said. “One thing I would say is this president always wants to talk about issues, whether it’s a debate or not. When you think about what radical Republicans are trying to do and what this president is trying to do, there’s a real contrast there.”

Biden and Trump have agreed to debate on June 27, moderated by CNN, which will be unusual because it is happening so early in the general election cycle.
