Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has refused to take responsibility for the murder and rape of a Maryland mother of five in February 2023, allegedly committed by a Salvadoran who entered the United States illegally.
Rachel Morin was found dead near a hiking trail 10 months ago, and Maryland State Police recently announced the arrest of Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez in the crime.
“I want to ask you about the murder of a mother in Maryland that’s been in the news. It’s been getting a lot of attention. She was murdered last year. Last week an illegal immigrant was arrested in her murder. He’s been accused of multiple crimes since he illegally crossed the border in early 2023,” CNN host Jim Acosta said.
“Of course, I know there are studies that show that statistically, illegal immigrants do not commit more crimes than native-born U.S. citizens, but what do you say to critics who blame the administration for allowing this to happen? Obviously, this is a story we hear a lot in right-wing media,” Acosta added.
“Americans are not safe because of failed immigration policies.”
“Jim, first and foremost, of course, our hearts go out to the children, the family, the loved ones, the friends, the women and mothers of those who were murdered. Jim, the criminals will be held accountable for their criminal acts. The criminals who committed this heinous act will be held accountable to the fullest extent and severity of the law. That’s my response,” Mayorkas replied.
Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said Morin likely is not Martinez-Hernandez’s first victim since entering the United States illegally.
“This suspect murdered a young woman in El Salvador in January 2023 before fleeing to the United States,” Gahler said. “Upon arriving in the United States, he carried out a home invasion in Los Angeles in March 2023 and brutally attacked a 9-year-old girl and her mother.”
DNA evidence taken from the scene of the Los Angeles attack in March 2023 linked Martinez-Hernandez to Morin’s murder.
“We are 1,800 miles from the southern border, and the American people are not safe because of failed immigration policies,” Gahler said.
