Dr. Fauci: ‘If trying to save people’s lives is a crime, then I’m guilty’

The hosts of “The View” praised Dr. Anthony Fauci for explaining that they believe he has done nothing to deserve the threat of jail time for his role in the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci is currently on tour promoting his new book, “On Call,” a memoir that chronicles his decades-long career in public health.

Moderator Sara Haines began her questioning of Fauci by noting that while COVID-19 is no longer a public health threat, tensions about it “have not subsided.”

“And we saw that on full display at your congressional hearing earlier this month, and we discussed it on this show, that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is not the only Republican who is actually calling for your criminal prosecution and incarceration. How seriously are you taking these threats?” Haines asked.

“I’m thinking not only about what I have to face, but also about the direction of the country, the social order and our democracy.”

“You know, you always take people’s threats seriously, but frankly, I don’t know what they’re talking about,” Fauci responded. “What about the charge that you saved millions of lives with a vaccine that you helped develop? Or that you got people to intervene to make themselves safer against a deadly pandemic that has taken 1.2 million lives? So if trying to save people’s lives is a crime, then I’m guilty.”

Host Sunny Hostin asked Fauci how he felt about the various threats he and his family have faced, and Fauci said he was most upset by people making credible threats against his daughters.

“You know, it’s inexcusable that three young women should be harassed, both physically and sexually intimidated, at the very beginning of their professional careers. Does this reflect who we are as a country or what? I don’t understand,” he said.

Fauci also said attempts by Republican lawmakers to hold him accountable, including downplaying the idea that COVID-19 originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, were a threat to public order.

“And that’s what I’m worried about. Not just what I have to face, but I’m worried about the direction of the country, the social order and our democracy. I think it’s … very threatening.”
