CNN political commentator: If Biden goes out there and messes up at the debate, ‘it’s game over’
Senior political commentator Van Jones has highlighted how crucial next week’s presidential debate is for President Joe Biden amid growing concerns about his mental health.
The debate with former President Donald Trump will be hosted by CNN on Thursday in Atlanta. Debate rules include microphones being cut if anyone speaks out of turn and there will be no live audience. A coin toss will determine whether Trump will speak last.
“This is like the entire presidency all in one week.”
Biden will spend a week at Camp David in preparation for the debate.
“To me, this is an election. The whole world is watching. If you’re a carbon-based life form, you’re watching. If you have a functioning brain stem, you’re watching, because if Biden loses the election, the game is over,” Van Jones said.
“If he goes on the campaign trail and a week later his approval ratings are down, there’s going to be a panic in the party. But if he can go on the campaign trail and take on Donald Trump, the runaway train, the locomotive, the runaway bull, he deserves another chance to be president, because it’s an uphill battle,” he continued. “You can’t. I can’t. If you can go toe-to-toe with a runaway train like Donald Trump for an hour and a half, then you deserve to be president. That’s it. This is like taking the entire presidency in a week.”

Biden has had a “senior moment” in nearly every public appearance over the past few months — from freezing onstage to mumbling sentences throughout — but it remains to be seen how well he will perform against Trump.
Trump, meanwhile, will spend the week before the debate holding rallies in various states, including Wisconsin, where he recently visited, and a rally in downtown Philadelphia on Saturday, though he will reportedly not hold a mock debate, a staple of political campaigns.
