Costco has issued an emergency recall of more than 500,000 portable chargers after two home fires and more than 100 reports of the devices overheating.
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Said consumer In a notice on Thursday, the company instructed customers to “immediately stop using” its myCharge POWER HUB All-In-One 10,000mAh portable chargers with model numbers AO10FK-A, AO10FK-B, and AO10FK-C.
The charger, sold exclusively at Costco, has received 120 reports of overheating malfunctions and two reports of home fires resulting in “approximately $165,000 in reported property damage,” officials said.
Costco has already received over 100 returns of products due to problems with the products melting, emitting smoke, catching fire, and exploding.
“There have been no reports of injuries requiring medical attention,” the committee noted.
The recall affects approximately 567,000 battery chargers.
Owners of such chargers are being warned not to dispose of them in regular trash or designated battery recycling bins.
“These potentially hazardous batteries must be handled differently than other batteries,” the CPSC said, instructing consumers to instead follow procedures established by their municipal recycling center for “damaged/defective/recalled lithium batteries.”
The commission added that myCharge would provide a replacement free of charge if customers contacted the company.
