A group of Mississippi fishermen are being hailed as heroes after rescuing 38 dogs from drowning in a lake.
Three fishermen were on a fishing trip on Grenada Lake. Bob Gist, 61, from Arkansas, was out fishing with his friend Brad Carlisle, from Tennessee.
Suddenly, the men heard the barking of more than 30 dogs.

Fishing guide Jordan Chrestman noticed the dogs in the water after they had chased a deer into the lake.
Gist later learned that the dogs had been taking part in an annual fox hunt in the area.
“We continued fishing for another 10 or 15 minutes and Jordan [Chrestman] “I said, ‘Hey guys, if you don’t mind, those dogs are in the water and we need to go and check them out.'”
The boat sailed across Grenada Lake to get close enough to the dogs.
“We’re just amazed because there are dogs everywhere,” Gist explained. “They can’t see the banks on either side so they’re all going in different directions.”
“They had been in the water for an hour and were close to drowning,” Gist added.
The fishermen loaded 27 dogs onto their boats and took them to shore, then returned and rescued 11 more, for a total of 38 dogs rescued.
He said, “I returned to the ramp with the last batch of dogs…” [and] “We had to drag them out of the boat because they didn’t want to get out. They were scared they would go back in the water. It was a terrible situation.”

The dog came towards me and I tried to reach out to the dog but it tried to bite me so we left the dog alone. We probably went back for the second load about 30-45 minutes later. By that time the dog was ready to go on the boat. The dog hadn’t bitten anyone.”
Gist pointed out that Chrestman is a true hero in dog rescue.
“If Brad and I had been out there alone on the boat, I wouldn’t have thought anything was wrong, but this young man in his 20s — I call him a young man because I’m 61 — knew he had to do something,” Gist said.
The dog’s owners reportedly thanked the fishermen for rescuing their dogs from drowning in the lake and offered Chrestman money as a thank you for saving their dogs, but he refused to accept the money.
