Don’t expect Derek Jeter to jump into a baseball broadcast booth anytime soon.
The Yankees legend, who hosts MLB pre-game and post-game shows for Fox Sports, said he probably won’t be doing live game commentary during his post-retirement television appearances. SI Media Podcast with Jimmy Traina.
“Full-game interviews are totally different than pre-game and post-game interviews,” Jeter said. “Full-game interviews are stressful because you have to talk for two-and-a-half to three hours straight and you have to be entertaining. Whereas pre-game and post-game, you get some time to share your thoughts and then post-game, you react to the game, the highlights, what you saw.
“At the moment I’m not interested in working on the whole game, I just talk a lot and analyze it a lot. And I’m really enjoying what I’m doing at the moment.”
Jeter will step down as Marlins CEO in 2022 and then join Fox Sports as a studio analyst ahead of the 2023 season.
The Hall of Fame shortstop previously received an offer from the YES Network but turned it down, The Washington Post reported in November 2022.
When Fox approached Jeter, he quickly turned it down and it took some persuasion for him to join the network.
“And it gave me a chance to think a little bit more,” he said. “It keeps me connected to the game. It keeps me connected to the sport while watching the game. I still think it’s the best sport in the world. So I gave it my all. I had a great time.”

“We have good chemistry. I know Alex. [Rodriguez] I’ve known Kevin for a long time. [Burkhardt]Kevin is the best. He’s the absolute best. You watch him every day, play the World Series, and then have to leave on Sunday to play an NFL game. It’s amazing what he can do. He does it comfortably, effortlessly. And David Ortiz… [He’s] He’s one of the best people you’ll ever meet.”
In the same interview, Jeter also had a message for those still asking about the anonymous voter who didn’t place him on the Hall of Fame ballot. Jeter fell one vote short of being selected unanimously like his Yankees teammate Mariano Rivera.
“I don’t care if someone didn’t vote for me. I really don’t care. I just find it annoying to have to answer questions all the time. And I don’t think I should be answering questions. I don’t care if anybody answers them. I don’t have a problem with that, but I’m tired of being asked that question.”
