North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (Republican) said former President Trump could win the election no matter who he chooses as his running mate.
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked Governor Burgum on CNN’s “State of the Union” what he would bring to the table if President Trump chose him as his running mate. Burgum declined to answer the question, instead emphasizing that the choice was up to President Trump and that the former president does not need help to get re-elected.
“Well, I think we have to look at the fact that President Trump could win this election no matter who the vice president is. He has the luxury of not having to pick somebody,” he said Sunday.
“And if you actually look back at political history, I think the last time a vice presidential candidate actually swayed the outcome of an election was when Kennedy picked Lyndon Johnson and Lyndon helped Kennedy win. And President Trump right now is winning among Hispanics, blacks, people under 30, independents. So he’s very strong on all fronts,” he added.
Collins continued to press Burgum about why he was a strong running mate for the former president, but Burgum didn’t give a clear answer.
“That’s up to President Trump. President Trump knows what standards he wants. He’ll make that choice when he needs to. He has a lot of great options,” he said when asked why he is a good candidate.
