The Department of Homeland Security recently proposed a plan to take a page out of Communist East Germany and turn mothers and teachers into informants to report on “domestic extremism” in their neighbors.
The group behind the move was called the Homeland Intelligence Specialists Group, but has since disbanded. In publicly released memos from a September 2023 meeting, they discussed ways to gather intelligence on Americans and “infiltrate communities in a non-threatening manner.”

American First Legal filed suit in November 2023, arguing that the group is made up of Democrats and is unbalanced, violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act.
As part of the out-of-court settlement, the group was dissolved and agreed to provide internal records to American First Legal.
Glenn is grateful that American First Legal took action, but he’s not convinced the group has truly been deterred.
“Just know that they’re not going to stop this stuff. They’re going to rename it, they’re going to dismantle it, they’re going to do it in a different way,” Glenn explains.
“You can’t love democracy and try to protect democracy and then organize secret meetings to highlight political dissenters and urge people to report them so that the government can do something about it,” he added.
“Americans have ambivalent feelings about snitching on one another,” members of the group said, citing the “failure” of “if you see something, say something.”
“We’re not ambivalent about it. We don’t want to do that. If we think someone is breaking the law and they’re doing something that is essentially terroristic, then of course we’ll call the police,” Glenn said, adding, “But I don’t snoop or spy on my neighbors.”
