Rep. Lauren Boebert wins Colorado GOP primary in new district

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) won the primary for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District on Tuesday after dropping out of her re-election race in the 3rd District to run in a more conservative district.

The two-term congresswoman defeated five Republican rivals in the 4th District primary, garnering 43.8 percent of the vote when her victory was reported by the Associated Press.

Boebert, 37, is also expected to win the 4th District general election in November. Voters in the Centennial State’s 4th District supported former President Donald Trump by a 16-point margin in 2020.

The 4th District seat was previously held by Republican Ken Buck, who retired from the House of Representatives in March.

In a Facebook post announcing her redistricting in December, Boebert claimed that “dark money” from “Hollywood elites and progressive funding groups” was being pumped into targeting her personally in the 3rd Congressional District.

She argued that redistricting would give Republicans a better chance of retaining both congressional seats.

Last time around, Boebert nearly lost the 2022 midterm elections in the 3rd District to Democrat Adam Frisch by 546 votes.

Frisch had raised more than four times as much money as Boebert at the time of the redistricting.

“We cannot afford to lose the 3rd District. Colorado’s 4th District is desperate for an uncompromising defender of freedom with a proven track record of upholding conservative principles,” Boebert said in December.

“We must protect our majority in the House, win the Senate and win the presidential election.”

In the 3rd District, Republicans have a 9 percentage point advantage, while in the 4th District, Republicans have a 27 percentage point advantage. According to the Colorado SunHe cited an analysis of election results from 2016 to 2020 conducted by Colorado legislative staff.
