Grammy-nominated artist Danny Gokey’s new album features his usual upbeat and hopeful songs, but also songs that warn of the deceptive nature of evil and urge the church to “wake up” to the lies that society has accepted. “Evil disguises itself to deceive people,” Gokey told Crosswalk Headlines.
LP with 11 songs, Heavenly Soundswas released on July 26th and is Gorky’s fifth studio album, which blends worship, pop and Latin sounds. i got youis currently on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart.
Another song, compensateaddresses what Gorky calls “hard truths,” likening the devil’s deception to facial makeup: “Wake up/We think the devil’s trying to fool us/He’s bewitching us with makeup/But it’s a hoax/Open your eyes and stop believing all these lies.”
The song seems to address a number of important cultural issues without going into specifics: “We lie because we’re afraid to speak up when we’re on the edge/’Cause gravity doesn’t change/Telling the truth doesn’t change anything/It’s only until we fall off the edge that we realize it.”
Gokey told Crosswalk Headlines he was led to write a song warning the church about cultural decline.
“The enemy makes bad things look good,” Gorky said, “and if we’re not discerning, if we’re not paying attention, if we’re not reading our Bibles, we can fall into that trap.”
“proverb The prostitute says, “My husband is traveling and his purse is full of money. He is about to leave. I have made my bed. Come and join me.” [and] Don’t lie, but let your joy come true.’ And [it] I mean, I didn’t know it was like slaughtering a cow. Just because something feels good. [and] “We look good, but sometimes we don’t realize the hook that’s destroying us from the inside. That’s what this song is about. Our culture is in decline, so I wanted to address that.”
The song urges Christians to abide by God’s Word: “Speak the truth even if it hurts, for that’s what love loves,” and warns individuals trapped in sin: “Satan won’t tell you how the party ends/Until you’re in deep.”
“Not everything is as it seems, or appears to be,” Gorky told Crosswalk Headlines. “Some things are like traps, and some bait is there to trick us. When a fish takes the bait, the worm or the little fish looks attractive. We’re like, ‘that looks tasty.’ But a lot of times, we don’t realize that something attractive and tempting has caught the hook.”
This isn’t the first time Gorky has spoken out about culture: last year, he released an EP themed around patriotism. BraveIt also contained songs praising America.
“I love my country.“ Gorky encourages Americans who are dejected by the division to look at the good in American history, which he likens to a marriage that is crumbling, where couples are reconnecting and “Remember what united us.“
“That’s where healing begins“ He said.
