Chicago teen arrested, charged with murder of retired police officer

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with shooting and killing a retired Chicago police officer, authorities announced this week.

Chicago Police Lt. Larry Snelling said Monday that the boy has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the death of retired police officer Larry Newman on June 20. A second suspect is also under investigation.

Newman was shot outside his home around 11:30 a.m. as he was paying someone to mow his lawn. Fox Chicago Police said he saw two people with guns outside.

“Upon seeing that these two individuals were armed, Newman heroically pushed the workers away from harm’s way. Newman then pulled a gun from his hip,” said Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti.

Two suspects opened fire, wounding Newman, and Newman fired another shot as the suspects fled the scene on foot.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died. The arrested teen turned himself in after authorities released surveillance video of the two suspects.

“He worked with young people to create a safe environment,” Snelling said, “Larry brought peace to his neighborhood and showed young people that there was a better way. Through a brazen and senseless act of violence, Larry’s life was taken by the very people he tried so hard to help.”

Newman joined the Chicago Police Department in the early 1980s and transferred to the Bomb and Arson Unit in 1988. He retired from the department in 2010, police said.

“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Larry, the Chicago Police Bomb Squad’s longest serving explosives technician and a wonderful human being. Larry was a wealth of knowledge and just a lot of fun to be around,” the Chicago Police Bomb Squad posted on X. “We pray for his soul and his family during this time.”

After he retired, he became a pastor and worked for the Transportation Security Administration at both Midway and O’Hare International Airports.

“He’s a really good guy,” said Councilman Jason Ervin, who represents Chicago’s 28th District. “This is a blow to the city of Chicago.”
