CAIR Backs Antisemitic Protest at L.A. Synagogue; Blasts Mayor Karen Bass

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)[ed]Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Wednesday (belatedly) spoke out against Sunday’s anti-Semitic protests at synagogues, calling the protests legitimate.

Breitbart News reported that a mob of pro-Palestinian activists targeted the Adas Torah synagogue in the Jewish neighborhood of Pico Robertson, blocking the entrance to prevent people from attending an event about buying property in Israel.

It was the second protest to take place at a Los Angeles synagogue in three days, with Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers ultimately clearing the protesters after violence erupted from pro-Israel counter-demonstrators.

Governor Gavin Newsom (D) and Mayor Bass (D) condemned the protests late Sunday night (after Breitbart News reported that neither had done so). On Monday, President Joe Biden also condemned the protests, calling the targeting of synagogues “dangerous, reprehensible, anti-Semitic and un-American.” The Israeli government joined in, calling the targeting of Jewish houses of worship and the violence that followed “utterly shocking.”

However, CAIR disputed Bass’ words on Monday, June 24, when he repeated his condemnation of the protests.

In a statement, CAIR said:

Mayor Bass made the remarks at a press conference following violence that erupted on June 24 when pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed with pro-Israel counter-demonstrators outside the Adas Torah Synagogue in Los Angeles. The demonstrators had gathered to protest a real estate event hosted by an Israeli-based agency that reportedly sells properties in Israel and the illegally occupied West Bank.

During the meeting, Mayor Bass condemned the pro-Palestinian protesters, describing the demonstrations as “violent” and “abhorrent.” She made no mention of reports that pro-Israel opponents had used violence against them, or that police on the ground had done little to stop the violence.

CAIR denied that the protests were anti-Semitic, claiming that Jewish people were involved in the demonstrations. CAIR did not explain why demonstrators blocked access to places of worship rather than peacefully protesting near them.

CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad praised the Oct. 7 terror attack by Hamas, leading the White House to distance itself from Hamas, which curiously had a hand in drafting Biden’s anti-Semitic “strategy.”

The company organising the event, A Home in Israel, placed ads in local Jewish newspapers listing coastal properties rather than homes in the “illegally occupied West Bank”.
