CNN Touts Debate Rules; Muted Mics at Biden’s Request

CNN is promoting the rules for Thursday night’s debate between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, outlining how microphones will be used, including one candidate’s microphone being muted while the other candidate is speaking, at Biden’s direct request.

CNN aired a segment on Wednesday showcasing how the microphones will work during the debates: Each candidate has two green lights that, when lit, let the candidate know their microphone is on and ready; when off, their microphone is off.

CNN demonstrated how one candidate would try to speak while interrupting the other, making the other candidate’s interruptions “difficult to understand.”

of The New York Times Revealed He said the muting of the microphones was “another request from Mr Biden and was intended to prevent Mr Trump’s habit of interrupting his opponent during debates.”

That’s not Biden’s only request: As previously reported, there will be no live audience at the debate, a request that was also made by the Biden campaign, with the 81-year-old Biden making it clear he doesn’t want to worry about the reaction of a live audience.

The campaign detailed the demands in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, informing them that they would not be participating in the commission’s debates, but also explaining why there would be no audience.

It read in part:

Debates should be conducted for the American voters watching on television or at home, not for the entertainment of a crowd of loud or disruptive partisans and donors who consume valuable debate time with their raucous cheering and heckling.

Holding a debate in a television studio with only the candidates and a moderator, as was the case with the first televised debate in 1960, would be a better, more cost-effective approach that focuses solely on the interests of voters.

surely, Times The Biden campaign also confirmed that it has not requested an audience for this network debate.

“This was a request from the Biden campaign, likely recognizing Trump’s tendency to please and profit from his supporters.” Times report.

This, combined with the fact that the co-hosts are known critics of Trump, only strengthens suspicions that the odds are already stacked against him: Both Jake Tapper and Dana Bash have been openly biased against Trump in the past.
