Several prominent New York Times columnists are urging President Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, citing his poor performance in Thursday night’s debate with former President Trump.
“President Biden is a good man who has concluded a long career in public service that led to a successful presidency. But I hope that he will reconsider his performance in Thursday night’s debate, withdraw from the race and leave the selection of the Democratic nominee to the party convention in August,” Times columnist Nicholas Kristof said. I have written.
Biden’s dismal debate performance “did not erase doubts about his age or ability,” Kristof wrote, arguing that while it was a “tough choice” for the president, it was “the safest path for the country.”
Another Times columnist, Thomas Friedman, who has written about his friendship with Biden, struck a similar tone.
“In my lifetime I cannot recall a more heartbreaking moment in American election politics,” he said. I have written“He’s a good man and a good president, but he should not seek reelection,” Biden said.
If Biden withdraws, Friedman argued, “he will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents in the history of our country.”
“If he insists on running and loses to Trump, Biden and his family and the staff and party members who supported him will not be able to show their faces,” he concluded. “They deserve better. America deserves better. The world deserves better.”
