CNN senior White House correspondent Kayla Touche reported Friday that some rank-and-file staffers in the Biden administration are so shocked by the president’s performance in Thursday’s debate that they can’t even come to work.
President Biden’s debate performance has once again sparked a national debate about his fitness to do his job, and while his team has publicly supported him, some are privately panicking.
“The Biden campaign believes they need some time for the dust to die down and for them to move forward,” Touche told CNN host Casey Hunt. “They’re planning for the president to remain in the race and for there to be another debate in September.”

“But I’ve spoken to rank-and-file White House staffers, and the mood inside the building is not good,” she continued. “They’re saying the mood in group chats between staffers is awful, it’s ugly. People are depressed, and a lot of people have chosen to work from home today. They’re saying, ‘We’re just commiserating, and we didn’t want to do that at our desks.'”
Previously, Hunt said on “Inside Politics with Dana Bash” that the debate “marks another unknown moment in American politics with 130 days until Election Day, as people close to the president are wondering, ‘Is Joe Biden going to stay in the race?'”
She then added that one particularly viral scene in which Biden awkwardly stares at Trump, and the 90 minutes of video that accompanied it, shows just how potentially devastating this election could be.
