The battle has begun.
University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley was none too pleased to see former player and current Chicago Sky star Camila Cardozo get thwarted at the rim by Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson, one of the stars Staley coached at South Carolina.
“Oh don’t do that to Camila! Don’t do that to Camila,” Staley yelled as she watched the Aces win the game, 95-83. “I’ll fight, I’ll fight, I’ll fight, I want to fight!”
Cardozo was selected third overall in the first round of the 2024 WNBA Draft after a dominant collegiate career that saw her win two national championships under Coach Staley and collect numerous individual accolades.
Since being drafted, Cardozo has appeared in 10 WNBA games, averaging 8.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Wilson, a two-time WNBA MVP and 2018 Naismith College Player of the Year while playing for Staley, had 31 points, six rebounds and three assists on Thursday, while rookie Cardoso played 30 minutes and finished with five points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Wilson found his former coach’s reaction amusing.
“I can hear the groans and screams in the background but @dawnstaley always told me not to take a break from playing…I want to fight now.” Wilson wrote to X..
“Sorry, Bucky.”
