A Mississippi assistant district attorney has been charged with contempt of court after appearing in court “visibly intoxicated” and speaking incoherently, authorities said.
According to documents, DeSoto County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Waller, 56, was arrested Thursday around 5 p.m. Retrieved by WREG.
He resigned on Friday.
“This morning, I accepted Mr. Waller’s resignation, effective immediately,” DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Burton said. “This is an unfortunate situation and does not reflect the high standards of performance expected from this office.”
“While we cannot comment on our former employee’s physical, emotional or mental wellbeing, we hope that he receives the support he needs for his wellbeing during this difficult time,” Barton added.
Waller was described in court as “visibly intoxicated” and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, according to court documents.
He is said to have made incoherent statements that disrupted the conduct of judicial duties.
He was released from the DeSoto County Jail around 1 a.m. Friday.
