Berlin Olympiastadion is the venue for the first of the Round of 16 games between Switzerland and Italy, who meet for the third time since the holders swatted the Swiss aside in the group stages en route to winning the last Euros. Reporting on that match for the Guardian, Jonathan Liew said “this Italy team has been the revelation of the tournament so far” but four years on the current iteration of the Azzurri has been comparatively unimpressive. Luciano Spalletti made as many as six changes to the team that was left in place at the end of the Croatia game, with Gianluca Mancini coming on for the suspended Riccardo Calafiori, and Stephan El Shaarawy, Gianluca Scamacca, Federico Chiesa, Nicolò Fagioli and Bryan Cristante also in the starting XI.
There was just one change from the Switzerland team that last played against Germany: Martín Vargas, who joined Calafiori at UEFA Naughty Step, replaced Silvain Widmar.

The Berlin Olympiastadion will be the venue for the first match of the round of 16 between Switzerland and Italy. It will be the third meeting between the two teams since they beat Switzerland in the group stage when they won the last Euros. Jonathan Liu, reporting on the match for The Guardian, said that “this Italian team has been phenomenal in the tournament so far,” but four years on, the current Italian team is relatively mediocre. However, Italy has never lost to Switzerland in their previous 11 meetings in all competitions.
Switzerland finished unbeaten in Group A but had to settle for second place behind Euro 2024 hosts Germany after Niklas Flukrug’s late equaliser prevented them from beating them. Having drawn twice with Italy in the last World Cup qualifiers and performing well so far in this tournament, Switzerland believe they have a chance to secure a rare win against Luciano Spalletti’s side today.
