Yankees teammates have tense moments amid losing skid, which turns into offensive outburst

The New York Yankees’ frustrations started to boil over on Friday night, but that’s probably all they needed.

The Yankees had lost 10 of 13 games heading into Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays despite a hot start.

If you know Yankees fans, you know that one poor performance can cause panic, but Marcus Stroman may have been hovering over the button as well.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. narrowly prevented a 6-4-3 double play, driving in a run and giving the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.

But Stroman, a former Blue Jay, was seen yelling at second baseman Gleyber Torres, who had just been benched for a lack of effort, to “Throw the damn ball!”

Toronto added another run in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Yankees captain Aaron Judge approached Stroman in the dugout and appeared to calm him down and warn him not to attack his teammates like that. Stroman appeared to comply.

Whatever the message, it seemed to have an immediate effect as the Yankees rallied for six runs in the sixth inning, capped by a two-run homer by Torres, and Stroman was the first player to come out of the dugout to celebrate Torres’ home run.

He said the two quickly made up after the match.

Strowman acknowledged that his “raw emotions” had come out and said he “has to do better.”

“Our guys went wild today. It was fun to watch. Raw emotion and passion is part of the game. When you’re deeply moved…frustration comes to the surface,” Stroman posted to X after the game. “It’s my fault for losing my cool. I need to work harder. I love this team dearly and I will always play at the highest level for my guys. NEXT!”

Torres himself said he wasn’t concerned.

The Yankees smashed seven more runs in the ninth inning to beat their AL East rivals, 16-5.

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Bronx Bombers, but the fire in a player as emotional and competitive as Stroman may be just what they needed.
