Macy Chiasson’s elbow certainly left a mark on Mayra Bueno Silva’s face.
As Bueno Silva and Chiasson grappled in the second round at UFC 303 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Chiasson landed a hard left elbow on Silva’s forehead, leaving him with a severe cut and forcing a stoppage of the bout.
Chiasson ended up winning by TKO.
After both fighters got to their feet, blood was streaming from her face, prompting referee Chris Tognoni to call a timeout so a ringside doctor could examine her.
The doctor suggested the match be stopped as the cut was “too deep”, but Tognoni subsequently refused.
Bueno Silva pleaded for the fight to continue, and when it was stopped he hopped out of the cage and engaged in an animated conversation with UFC CEO Dana White.
“I feel good leaving the cage with a win tonight, but it wasn’t quite how I wanted it to be,” Chiasson said on the post-fight broadcast. “It was a great elbow, but I don’t think anybody leaves a fight not completely satisfied.”
“I wish we could have gone a little bit further but I think the umpire did a good job stopping it and it was appropriate.”
Still, Chiasson believes he has sent a message to other fighters in the bantamweight division.
“I can stand, I can take the ground, I can wrestle, I can do jiu-jitsu, I can elbow, I can guard,” Chiasson said. “I think I showed them I’m a complete fighter.”
