A mother was recently arrested for leaving her young daughter in a hot car before leaving for work.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) announced the arrest of 36-year-old Ashley Stallings on Thursday. The mother was charged with negligent homicide and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury in connection with the death of her 8-year-old daughter.
Police explained in a press release that Stallings’ daughter was found in critical condition inside a hot car in Charlotte on Wednesday. Officers were called to the situation around 6:30 p.m.
“Upon arriving on scene, officers located an 8-year-old girl in critical condition inside the vehicle,” the police statement read. “The victim was transported to hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.”

“Further investigation revealed the victim had been left inside a vehicle in hot weather and received emergency medical treatment.”
The cause of the girl’s death was listed as brain herniation caused by hyperthermia, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by WTVD. In the affidavit, police report Stallings returned to his car to find his daughter breathing shallowly and foaming at the mouth.
The mother then smashed the back window with a hammer and attempted to drive to the hospital, but stopped and called for help at a local store. The suspect told police he knew his daughter was in the car but left the air conditioning on.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was dispatched to a report of a young child in distress.
According to the affidavit, Stallings “believed the victim had stopped because he was cold.”
“She admitted that she knew the temperature outside was 94 degrees and that she should not have left the victim alone in the vehicle,” police added.
Following his arrest, Stallings was transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
