Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said it “doesn’t matter” which Democratic candidate former President Trump faces in the 2024 general election, saying all Democrats would support the same policies as the current administration.
During an interview on “The Hill Sunday with Chris Styrewalt” on Sunday, Whatley also cast doubt on the possibility of Democrats replacing President Biden as their 2024 presidential nominee, noting that Biden would have to make the choice himself, which he said seems unlikely.
“Unless he resigns, there is no process by which he can stage a revolt and remove him from the conference, and there are no indications of that from his conversations over the past few days,” Whatley said.
“Secondly, not one of the Democrats will bring to the stage a proposal that is different from what Joe Biden has proposed. None of them will take different policy positions. They will all be reinforcing all of the same policies that Joe Biden has unleashed on America,” Whatley added.
His comments follow footage of Trump suggesting Democrats generally have lower approval ratings than the current president.
Asked whether Biden or Vice President Harris would be better at leading the charge, Whatley replied, “For us, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to run our own campaign.”
“As we saw in the debate, President Trump is going to get there. He’s going to talk about what he’s going to do to make America great again, and that really starts with repairing our southern border, restoring our economy and restoring our standing in the world,” he continued.
The interview came as Biden’s shaky debate performances have some Democrats questioning the wisdom of keeping him at the top of their shortlists, while Biden’s repeated debate lies have sparked a concerted effort among Democrats to upend the narrative and paint Trump as unfit to be president.
