If we arrived at Roland-Garros with the general pattern of things reversed – we knew who was likely to win the women’s event but had not a clue who might take the men’s – we move to Wimbledon with both trophies up for grabs.

In the women’s competition, it seems unlikely Marketa Vondrousova, now seeded six, can repeat last year’s unlikely triumph, while of those above her, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are still learning the surface; Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champ, is erratic; and Aryna Sabalenka, who looks best-placed, still has plenty to prove – especially given her shoulder injury. Ultimately, the finalists – never mind the winner – winner could be any of them or none of them.

On the men’s side, things look a little less complex, the questions more about who wins the big matches when they inevitably arrive. We don’t know exactly where Novak Djokovic is in his preparations, but do know what it takes to beat him when it counts, and if that happens before the semi-finals, in which he’s seeded to meet Alexander Zverev, it’d be a surprise.

Meantime, in the other half of the draw, it’s hard to shake the excitement of another impending Carlos Alcaraz v Jannik Sinner epic. The former is the defending champion and French Open champion, the latter the Aussie Open champion and world number one, which is to say we’re at the start of a rivalry which could easily define the next decade.

Before that, though, we’ve got all the joy and love of the early rounds: surprise classics, huge shocks and just the enormous sense of affirming wellbeing we get from unstoppable, incessant tennis all day every day. So, in the immortal words of the all-time worst sporting chant and exhortation, “Let’s go!”.

Important Events
Watson beat Minnen to take the lead 3-4. Meanwhile, Garin, who was holding more comfortably than Shan, was putting the pressure on Shan at 3-5, while on Court 15, Arnaldi and Tiafoe were trying to hit the breaker.
A forehand error from Arnaldi earned Tiafoe a break, and the American would now serve for the set. And you can see by the way he pumps his fist that he knows how difficult this match is. It’s the same in the next game and he’s now losing 30-15. Then the youngster wins another good point but he can’t return a powerful backhand and doubles back to level at 5-5. It could still be going on at this time tomorrow.
Shapovalov’s power game has been too much for Jarry to handle so far. He won the first set 6-1, the same way 28th-seeded Dayana Yastremska did against Nadia Podoroska in the women’s match.
Olympics News
Heather Watson will play at her fourth Olympic Games this summer as part of Team GB after her men’s and women’s doubles pairings for the Paris 2024 Olympics have been confirmed by the British Olympic Association (BOA).
Watson, a mainstay of British tennis for the past decade, will compete in the women’s doubles alongside Olympic debutant Katie Boulter, who was announced to compete in the women’s singles event last month.
Andy Murray and Dan Evans, who will compete in the men’s singles, will also compete in the men’s doubles alongside Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury, while mixed doubles registrations will be confirmed on-site in Paris.
Men’s singles: Jack Draper, Cam Norrie, Dan Evans, Andy Murray.
Women’s singles: Katie Boulter.
Men’s Doubles: Neal Skupski & Joe Salisbury/Andy Murray & Dan Evans
Women’s Doubles: Katie Boulter and Heather Watson
The Olympic tennis tournament will take place at Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4, with players competing in five medal events in men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
The same goes for Shapovalov, another dangerous floater. He is better suited to grass than Jarry and leads Jarry 4-1 30-0.
Grizzly Dimitrov quickly regained his form, He’s up 3-0 against Dusan Lajovic, while Arnaldi is broken back by Tiafoe to lead 2-1. The 23-year-old Italian is a really good player and is in pretty good form. He reached the second round in Melbourne, the fourth round in Paris and also in New York, but lost in four games to Roberto Carballes Baena in his Wimbledon debut last season. Still, it’s a tough first-round draw for Tiafoe and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset.
The BBC doesn’t seem to agree. In my opinion. My favourite match has no commentary whatsoever and the main show has Heather Watson broadcasting a match that, if you listen now, is losing 0-2 to Griet Minnen.
Shan wards off a break point with a flick down the line And ultimately it holds up, but more importantly, Tim Henman thinks Naomi Osaka will win the women’s event, and I may or may not have put money aside with my local racing accountant for the same inevitability.
Garin continues to hold on to love As for Shan, I think he would love to play a seeded player in the first round. He’s flashy, he’s charismatic, he’s got a lot of shots. I don’t know if he has what it takes to come out on top, but he’s got something.
Ready, play. Let’s go!
Players participating in various matches I’m knocked up.
Upcoming matches to look forward to: Brenda Furvirtova vs. Mila Andreeva (24). Both are 17 and excellent. I have no idea why they’re tucked away at the end of Court 12, but here they are.
What to see? First, I’ll make some predictions for Cristian Garin vs. Jerry Xiang, Nicolas Jarry (19) vs. Denis Shapovalov, and Matteo Arnaldi vs. Francis Tiafoe (29).
Yes, cloudy The rest of this week. This country.
Enid Blyton advised: My guess is that if the sky is blue enough for sailors to wear trousers, the day will be sunny. And we are in that situation now. But the Met Office is predicting it will be cloudy. And that will be good enough for us.
preamble
Hello and welcome to the first day of Wimbledon 2024!
If when we came to Roland Garros the general pattern had been reversed – that is, we knew who was going to win the women’s tournament but had no idea who was going to win the men’s tournament – then at Wimbledon we would be competing for both trophies.
In the women’s match, Marketa Vondrousova, currently seeded sixth, seems unlikely to repeat last year’s improbable victory; meanwhile, above her, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are still learning the surface; 2022 champion Elena Rybakina is shaky; and the most favored, Aryna Sabalenka, still has a lot to prove, especially given her shoulder injury. In the end, the players who make it to the finals (not to mention the winners) may or may not win.
In the men’s match, the situation is less complicated, and there is growing doubt as to who will win when the big match inevitably comes. We don’t know exactly how prepared Novak Djokovic is, but we do know what it will take to beat him when it counts. And it would be a surprise if that happens before his semifinal against Alexander Zverev.
Meanwhile, in the other half of the draw, it’s hard to shake the excitement as another epic match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner looms. The former is the defending French Open champion and the latter is the Australian Open champion and world number one, meaning we’re at the beginning of a rivalry that could easily define the next decade.
But before that, we get to reap all the joy and love of the early rounds: the surprise wins, the big shocks, and that big sense of euphoric certainty that comes from nonstop tennis every day. So, in the immortal words of the worst sports chant and encouragement of all time, “Let’s go!”
