A 17-year-old badminton player from China died suddenly after collapsing on court during a tournament in Indonesia, authorities said on Monday.
Zhang Zhijie during a match against a Japanese opponent Collapsed The player suffered a seizure at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships on Sunday, according to ABC News.
The Indonesian Badminton Association said Zijie was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital where he later died after suffering cardiac arrest.
“Examinations and treatment of the victims at both hospitals came to the same conclusion that the victims suffered sudden cardiac arrest,” Indonesian Badminton Federation spokesman Broto Happy said.
As the tournament continued, the injured player’s fellow players held a moment of silence in his memory.
The Badminton Association of China said it was shocked by the incident and offered its condolences to Zhi Jie’s family.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Zhang Zhijie due to a sudden illness while competing in an international tournament,” the organization said in a statement. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone in society for the concern and support for Zhang Zhijie. We will do all we can to support Zhang Zhijie’s family.”
