Angry fans call for Gregg Berhalter’s job after embarrassing Copa America exit

American soccer fans want change, and they want it now.

Angry American fans took to social media to call for the firing of U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter following the team’s elimination from the Copa America with a 1-0 loss to Uruguay at Arrowhead Stadium.

Berhalter was already in a tough spot before the match, with the United States set to host the World Cup in 2026 and the U.S. hoping to make a run at the tournament.

Instead, a disorganized U.S. team stayed close to Uruguay for much of the night, until Matias Olivera scored a rebound in the 66th minute to give Uruguay their only goal of the night.

The lackluster night only fueled calls for Berhalter to be fired, which began as fans left the stadium.

A video posted to X shows fans exiting Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium chanting, “Fire Greg!”

“It really pisses me off. Reasonable people have been calling for a new coach for years.” An account wrote to X. “The fact that the U.S. Soccer Federation re-hired Gregg Berhalter is extraordinary. It’s okay to be wrong, but you can’t stay wrong. The U.S. Men’s Soccer National Team needs a new coach immediately.”

Another video posted to social media by Kansas City’s Fox 4’s Harold Kunz shows fans booing Berhalter as he goes to thank those in attendance.

Berhalter was rehired last summer but has received mixed reviews from fans and media about his tenure at the helm of the program.

Asked if he was the right man to lead the U.S. team into the 2026 World Cup, he simply said: “Yes.” I answered, “Yes.”

But that may not be enough to calm angry fans.

“Gregg Berhalter getting fired would give me more joy than the U.S. men’s national team winning.” Another person wrote:
