72% Say Joe Biden Does Not Have ‘Cognitive Health’ to Serve

A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted Tuesday found that 72% of registered voters believe President Joe Biden does not have the “mental” and “cognitive fitness” to serve as president, up 7 points after the debate.

The poll highlighted serious doubts among voters about whether Biden can complete his term in office.

The poll is one of the first post-debate polls that Democratic activists and donors will be looking at to gauge how much damage Biden’s candidacy has suffered as a result of his debate performance.

Seventy-two percent of voters say Biden does not have the “mental” and “cognitive health” necessary to serve as president, up from 65% since June 9.

Among Democrats, 41% agree that Biden does not have the “mental” and “cognitive health” to serve as president, up from 29% in June.

Additionally, 72% of voters believe Biden should not run for a second term, up 9 points from February.

Among Democrats, 46% say Biden should not run for a second term, up 10 points from February.

When pollsters asked why Biden shouldn’t run, voters responded:

  • Age: 86 percent
  • Potential decisions to make as president: 71 percent
  • Presidential record: 66 percent
  • Ability to campaign effectively: 59 percent

Forty-five percent of Democrats say Biden should resign, consistent with previous poll results. USA Today Of those, 41 percent said Biden should resign.

poll sampling There were 1,130 registered voters as of June 28-29, 2024, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
