Warriors’ Steph Curry pens emotional goodbye to Klay Thompson

Splash Brothers for life.

Following the news on Monday that Klay Thompson had signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks, Stephen Curry took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the 11 seasons they spent as teammates on the Warriors.

Curry, who won four championships with Thompson, took to Instagram Stories to reflect on the past decade and speak about the dynasty he built with Golden State.

“Although we will never finish our journey together, what we accomplished will never be repeated,” Curry wrote. “I couldn’t have imagined a better ride with you by my side. [center Draymond Green].

“You’ve changed the way the game is played and Kira Clay is at the heart of it. Thank you for everything. Just enjoy playing basketball and doing what you do.”

Curry and Thompson are one of the best backcourt duos in NBA history and are nicknamed the “Splash Brothers” because of their excellent shooting ability.

This term is Posted by X in December 2012It was written by Brian Witt, who was the team’s digital content producer at the time.

As part of a marketing initiative at the time to promote stars for All-Star voting, Witt came up with the “Splash Brothers” campaign for Curry and Thompson.

The idea was born from a childhood poster of Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco sitting on top of a police car, holding giant wooden bats with the words “Bash Brothers” written on them. Witt told The Athletic.

The term “splash” is often used in basketball to refer to a shot that is taken around the perimeter.

Curry and Thompson made history on Dec. 16, 2023, during the Warriors’ 124-120 win over the Nets at Chase Center.

Curry, the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made, became the first player in league history to reach 3,500 career three-pointers.

With the game, Thompson passed Jason Terry (2,282) for ninth place on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers made list.

After being selected 11th overall by the Warriors in the 2011 NBA Draft, Thompson will take his talents to Dallas and team up with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in an attempt to win his fifth championship.

The Warriors helped facilitate the move with a sign-and-trade involving the Hornets.

His father, Michael Thompson, said his son’s decision came down to between the Mavericks and the Lakers, and he was disappointed his son didn’t choose the latter.

“I’m not in the mood to celebrate right now,” Michael said during an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio on Tuesday morning. “Obviously, this is Klay’s decision. It’s his life.”

“He’s a grown man. … I was really disappointed. As you can imagine, I was really hopeful that he would join the Lakers.”

Michael played for the Lakers from 1987 to 1991, winning two NBA championships with Los Angeles, and currently works as a radio analyst for the organization.

The Warriors announced Monday night that they would retire Thompson’s No. 11 jersey.
