An illegal immigrant MS-13 gang member wanted on murder charges has been found living in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
Elmer Neftali Martinez Escobar, a 31-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, arrested On June 29, he was charged with simple possession of marijuana after being stopped for a traffic violation in Berkeley County.
Police said Martinez-Escobar was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy who said he smelled of marijuana.
After admitting to possessing marijuana, the deputy ran Martinez-Escobar’s name in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and discovered he was an MS-13 gang member and wanted on a murder charge in his native El Salvador.
Deputies found eight grams of marijuana in Martinez-Escobar’s possession and arrested him. Martinez-Escobar was booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center and then taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
“This traffic stop is a great example of our deputies using their training to identify criminals,” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis told local media. “While we don’t know what will happen with this traffic stop, I have confidence that our deputies will continue to work hard to keep Berkeley County safe.”
Martinez Escobar likely crossed the U.S.-Mexico border as an illegal immigrant without being detected by Border Patrol. He is in ICE custody awaiting deportation to El Salvador.
