The Boston Globe The editorial board joined a chorus of traditional media outlets calling for President Joe Biden to step down following his poor performance in last Thursday’s debate.
“Since last week’s presidential debate, President Biden’s team has made few statements to adequately explain why his performance was historically poor, other than to say he had a cold.” Gloves Editorial Committee I have written“Instead, what we heard was a rallying around an embattled and hurting candidate.”
While the committee acknowledged that Biden’s withdrawal would raise many questions, it also acknowledged that the party would ultimately be united no matter who is nominated.
Contrary to the idea that the battle for delegates will split the party, there are many reasons to believe that Trump will unite the party behind its candidate. They will be united by their fears that Trump will undermine the rule of law, politicize the Department of Justice, further erode abortion rights, abandon America’s traditional role as a leader of the Western world and perhaps withdraw from NATO altogether, impose draconian bailouts as part of a border crackdown, end all U.S. efforts to fight climate change, and let inflation soar with a sweeping tariff regime. The former president’s repeated promises to prosecute his political opponents may also be catching some’s attention.
Some will worry that Biden’s campaign funds will be lost if Harris isn’t the candidate, that he won’t appear on the Ohio ballot if he doesn’t choose a candidate until the convention, and that a three-month general election campaign is not enough time to introduce a new candidate to the country. But election law experts say the Ohio and campaign finance issues are easily overcome. And European countries routinely hold national elections that last just a few weeks. Many Americans would be happy if the election were that short.
The editorial board said all of this is impossible unless Biden himself steps aside and the party chooses a nominee. They also urged party leaders to convince Biden to step aside. If Biden stays in office, they said he should do more to allay concerns, such as doing live interviews on Fox News or in difficult settings like town halls where he can take tough questions from a live audience.
Breitbart News reported Wednesday that Biden has no plans to drop out of the race and that Democratic governors appear to be publicly supporting him.
