The calendar turned to July on Monday, meaning trading season is just around the corner.
Since the MLB Draft moved to July, teams have typically waited until the draft is over (it takes place on the Sunday, Monday or Tuesday of the All-Star break) before diving headfirst into the trade market, and even then, most deals seem to happen in the final 48-72 hours before the deadline, which this year was July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
The Yankees will be in Philadelphia on that day in the midst of a three-game series against the National League’s best team, and if they want to face the Phillies in October, they may need help getting there via the trade market.
The Yankees’ biggest need that has emerged through the first three months of the season has been in the bullpen: Clay Holmes has been mostly solid as the closer, Luke Weaver and Michael Tonkin have been pleasant surprises in positions of influence (especially Weaver), and Tommy Kahnle has also started to find his groove in recent weeks.
