Four people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a home in Northern Kentucky early Saturday morning, police said.
Police said the shooting suspect then fled the home and led police on a vehicle pursuit, but was killed when his vehicle rolled into a ditch.
City Police Chief Jeff Mallery said police heard gunshots when they responded to a home in Florence at about 2:50 a.m. Police found seven gunshot victims inside the home, Mallery told reporters at a news conference.
Four people were found dead, police said. Three were taken to a Cincinnati hospital in serious condition. Mallery said they are expected to recover.
Police said the suspect was acting alone and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Mallery said people had gathered at the home for a birthday party for the homeowner’s 21-year-old son, who the police chief said was killed in the shooting.
Mallery said the 20-year-old suspect appears to have known people at the party but was not invited.
The motive is under investigation.
“I know what’s going on across the country, but this is the first time we’ve had a shooting in Florence,” Mallery said, “so, yeah, it’s very emotional. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, the officers that responded to the scene, everyone who was touched by this incident.”
Florence is located approximately 12 miles (19 km) south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
