President Joe Biden postponed a speech he had planned to deliver at the National Education Association’s (NEA) annual conference in Philadelphia following the strike announcement and union members setting up picket lines.

Biden was scheduled to speak on Sunday, although his campaign insisted the president is “a staunch supporter of labor unions and will not cross picket lines.” The picket lines effectively shut down the week-long convention and canceled the final three days of programming, according to the NEA.
The NEA’s state affiliates have endorsed Biden.
Biden, whose reelection chances continue to fade, is also planning to visit Pennsylvania this weekend, according to his campaign.
The union set up picket lines around the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Friday to begin a three-day strike.
The NEA union claims that NEA has not complied with basic union requirements and has filed two grievances for unfair labor practices.
They alleged that the NEA unilaterally stopped paying overtime wages for holiday work and concealed information about $50 million worth of outsourced contracts.
In a statement, the NEA said it remained committed to a fair negotiation process.
It also expressed concern that “misinformation has been shared” regarding contract negotiations.
