On Thursday, 18-year-old Jesse Hamrick was celebrating Independence Day at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.

When he jumped into the water, his friends saw him struggling and felt an electric shock when they tried to jump in to help him.

They managed to pull Hamrick out and began CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and transported Hamrick to a local hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

Two friends who jumped in to save him were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after being electrocuted in the water.

The boy’s official cause of death has yet to be determined, but investigators believe he may have been electrocuted.

according to ABC13A representative from the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire and Rescue Dive Team testified that there was a current on the pier at the time of the incident.

Hamrick had graduated from Steamboat Springs High School a month earlier and was the son of the school’s principal.
