The Wimbledon Championships continue to be a thorn in Iga Swiatek’s side.
There’s a reason she’s the No. 1 ranked player in the world: She just won her fourth French Open title (her third in a row) last month, has reached at least the semifinals at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open, and is on track to win the U.S. Open in 2022.
But her best performance in England will be reaching the quarter-finals last year after Saturday’s upset defeat.

Swiatek’s 21-match winning streak came to an end as she lost to Yulia Putintseva in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
“It’s not easy going from this type of tennis where you feel like you’re playing the best tennis of your life to another surface where you’re struggling a little bit,” Swiatek said. “All of that has combined to mean I’m not having a very good time at Wimbledon.”

But Swiatek said she didn’t have much energy left after a tough match at the French Open.
“My tank of pushing myself to the limits was suddenly empty,” she said. “It was a bit of a surprise.”
In the end, Swiatek committed 38 unforced errors, more than double her opponent’s 15.
Putintseva, too, has won eight consecutive matches on grass courts, including a victory in Birmingham before coming to London. This is the 29-year-old Kazakhstan player’s 10th Wimbledon appearance and the first time she has advanced beyond the second round.
