Democrats Voice Frustration over Media’s Focus on Biden

Some Democrats expressed concern Monday about the mainstream media’s newfound scrutiny of President Joe Biden rather than former President Donald Trump.

Political experts say that if the election becomes a referendum on Biden and his policies, Democrats could lose the White House in November. Conversely, if the media places Trump at the center of the political debate, scrutiny of Biden and his policies will be minimized, ultimately benefiting Democrats.

“The focus has to come back to Trump and the rights we will lose if he becomes president,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.). Said of The New York Times“The last three elections have shown that if you get attention, you lose.”

“Let’s stop talking about this,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) said. “We need to get back to talking about Donald Trump.”

“My goal is to defeat Trump,” Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) added. “Those who want him to resign and those who want him to stay are aligned on the fear of MAGA.”

Not everyone believes the spotlight will shift away from Biden. Over the weekend, a total of nine Democratic lawmakers reportedly called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race, reigniting a cycle of negative media coverage of Biden.

“Trump is a deeply flawed candidate,” David Axelrod argued. Times“It’s going to be very hard now for the Biden team to focus on him.”

of Times The article reported on Biden’s failed strategy to center the election campaign around Trump.

The Biden campaign’s efforts to cast doubt on President Donald J. Trump’s ability to serve as president have spiraled back into a referendum on the president’s own competence.

There is no question within the Democratic Party that this election must be centered around Trump, just as Biden did in 2020, when he was able to draw a winning coalition that spanned progressive Democrats and moderate Republicans alike.

Biden then ran as a transition candidate, winning the support of Republicans and other voters seeking a return to normalcy in Washington. Standing next to Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, Biden said he was “a bridge and nothing else,” giving the clear impression that he was a vehicle for moving the country away from the Trump administration.

A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted Tuesday found that 72% of voters believe Biden should not run for a second term, up nine points from February.

Additionally, 72% of voters say Biden does not have the “mental” and “cognitive health” necessary to serve as president, up from 65% since June 9.
