Third in line to presidency calls on Biden to ‘seriously consider’ the future

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), third in line to the presidency, said Biden must “seriously consider” how to protect his legacy in the future, amid growing calls within his Democratic Party for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race due to concerns about his mental health.

Murray, who is interim president and third in rank to the presidency, It said in a statement Trump said Monday that Biden needs to be “much more forceful and energetic” on the campaign trail and prove to voters that he is more deserving of another term in the White House than former President Trump.

“President Biden has to lead the charge,” Murray said.

“We need to see a more dynamic and energetic candidate on the campaign trail in the near future who can convince voters that he is fit for the presidency,” Murray said. “At this critical time for our country, President Biden must seriously consider how best to protect and preserve his incredible legacy.”

After the first presidential debate in June, questions were raised about Biden’s physical and mental health, leading to calls from voters, Democratic lawmakers and donors for the party to choose a new candidate to face Trump in November.

House Democrats met virtually over the weekend to discuss the future of Biden’s reelection campaign after his performance in the debate was harshly criticized.

But Biden has remained defiant in the face of calls for him to step down and has vowed to continue his campaign.

“The bottom line is, we’re not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said Monday in a phone interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I wouldn’t be running if I wasn’t convinced I was the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024,” Biden said. “We had a democratic nominating process in which voters spoke clearly, and I won 14 million of those votes.”
