Dr. Tom Pitts, a board-certified neurologist, told NBC News that it’s clear President Biden has Parkinson’s disease and that he could diagnose it “from across the mall.”
Concerns that Biden’s health may go beyond mental health issues were heightened by reports that a leading Parkinson’s disease expert visited the White House eight times during Biden’s presidency. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to confirm the visits, citing security reasons, even though they were publicly recorded.
“If a medical student doesn’t choose Parkinson’s disease on the test, they’ll have to take a make-up class.”
“I see [patients like] “I talk to him 20 times a day in the clinic,” Pitts said of Biden. “The irony is that he has classic features of neurodegeneration, which is that he has difficulty finding words, and it’s not, ‘Oh, I can’t find the words,’ but it’s due to degeneration in the word retrieval area.”
“He’s also overcome his stutter. Could that be a factor?” asked Tom Lamas of NBC News.
“No, this is not a palate issue or an inconsistency in pronunciation,” Pitts said, pointing out Biden’s stiff body movements.
“He can’t swing his arms. He stands up with his head arched. When he turns, you see them turn in unison. It’s not a rapid turn. This is one of the hallmarks of Parkinson’s disease, where you have rigidity and bradykinesia, slowness of movement, and he has that, especially with his low voice. … You could have diagnosed it from across the mall,” Pitts continued.
When Lamas asked if Parkinson’s is difficult to diagnose, Pitt replied that it is actually one of the easier movement disorders to diagnose.
“I’m a Democrat, and I’m like, this isn’t a hard case,” Pitts noted, noting that the characteristic motor symptoms are conclusive evidence that someone has Parkinson’s. “If medical students didn’t pick Parkinson’s on a test, they would be remedial.”
Pitts also questioned Jean-Pierre’s excuse that he couldn’t confirm visits because service members are treated in the White House medical suite, saying that if a service member has a movement disorder like Parkinson’s disease, they should be medically discharged.
Biden, who is clearly in less good health than he was a few years ago and faces ongoing calls from Democrats to drop out of the race, remains the nominee and remains adamant he has the best chance of beating former President Donald Trump.
