Democrats gathered at Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters instead of Capitol Hill on Tuesday to reduce leaks as they debated who they should support as the presidential nominee following President Joe Biden’s abysmal debate performance.
Despite the precautions, some lawmakers leaked the contents of the meeting to the media, describing the meeting as a “funeral” with “considerable frustration” and “grief.” One of the leaked remarks was from a pregnant House Democrat who, during the meeting, had openly considered aborting her unborn baby, NOTUS. reportThe congresswoman, without naming her name, reportedly said she was over 40 and could face complications, and appeared to suggest that abortions could be difficult to access late in pregnancy if former President Donald Trump were elected.
“At one point, a Democrat in the House of Representatives (whose name NOTUS is withholding at the congresswoman’s request) announced to her caucus that she was pregnant,” reporters Riley Rogerson and Reese Gorman wrote.
She also said that becoming pregnant after age 40 means a higher risk of health complications. She currently lives in a state where she has certain choices regarding her health and her child, but those rights may go away if Trump wins, according to the three lawmakers who relayed the anecdote.
One anonymous member who spoke to NOTUS called the pregnant lawmaker’s comments “very powerful.”
“I think people were very moved, but I don’t think it changes the overall dynamic of the Congressional Black Caucus,” the congressman reportedly added.
What’s new: House Democrats increasingly believe Biden will survive as the nominee, but there are still major concerns about him topping the list of potential candidates.

The morning caucus ultimately “did not do much to sway Democrats that Biden is, in fact, the right choice,” but with so many Democrats refusing to abandon him, the report continues, “it’s clear Biden isn’t going anywhere.”

“We’re on this horse at this point,” one House Democrat who privately wants to see Biden ousted told NOTUS, “so I’m shifting gears. I’m going to do my best to make the case that we should elect the old guy, not the crazy guy.”
