Senate Democrats said calls from elites and celebrities to replace President Biden as the Democratic nominee do not pose a “threat to democracy,” even though primary voters across the country have already cast their ballots for Biden.

Democratic lawmakers have frequently discussed various threats to the American system of governance, focusing in particular on former President Trump and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Fox News Digital asked several lawmakers whether calls to replace Biden after his victory in the primary election are a threat to democracy, similar to the attempt by Trump supporters on January 6 to stop the certification of the 2020 election.

“I don’t think there’s any comparison at all. Zero. There’s no comparison,” said Sen. Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with the Democratic Party.

Several House Democrats have called on Biden, the party leader, to drop out of the race, including Reps. Angie Craig (D-MN), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Mike Quigley (D-IL), Mickey Sherrill (D-DJ) and Adam Smith (D-WA). Additionally, as confidence in Biden’s ability to beat Trump continues to fade, several celebrities and major Democratic donors have urged the president to drop out of the race.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) would not comment on the calls, saying, “I’m just expressing my own opinion. I’m not going to characterize or comment on other people’s opinions.”

In particular, he singled out President Trump, claiming that the former president is an “existential threat to democracy.”

Asked the same question, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) said, “In Georgia, former President Trump was recorded pressuring and threatening the state’s highest election official to find out the exact number of votes he needed to win and the number of votes he lost.”

“This misconduct is absolutely egregious and unacceptable for any public office holder in the country, any Republican. It should be a disqualification for former President Trump and every Republican office holder in the country,” he added.

“I understand the concerns my colleagues had, but we got answers from the president on Monday,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said.

“With 117 days left until the November election, the time is now [to get] “He should get back to work,” he said, reiterating his support for Biden remaining the Democratic nominee, but did not say whether calls for his resignation were a threat to democracy.

But Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff said such calls could go to a level that undermines democracy.

“Donald Trump is the single greatest threat to our democracy, and certainly in his efforts at the end of this battle to undermine the winner of the Democratic primary, Joe Biden, and to invalidate the primary votes of millions of party members across the country, I feel that our democracy is in danger if this tactic is not stopped.”

“We should be fully focused on building the same winning coalition that got the Biden-Harris ticket elected in the first place,” he added.
