Donations to Biden campaign are imploding, sources tell NBC News: ‘The money has absolutely shut off’

Ann NBC News report Multiple sources close to the Biden reelection campaign say campaign finances have plummeted since the disastrous presidential debate.

Sources close to the campaign said they were already facing a drop in donations, but the situation was pushed into crisis after President Joe Biden stumbled during a CNN debate with former President Donald Trump.

“Donors are in denial…I don’t think they’ll believe it.”

“The situation is already dire,” one source said.

“The situation is already dire,” another source said.

Two of the sources said donations from major donors are on track to be cut in half or more in July.

“Donors are in denial. They were on a call with the president that seemed very contrived to people. I don’t think they’re going to believe it,” the source said, referring to a national fundraising call Biden had with donors.

“They called on the most loyal and die-hard people,” the source continued. “There were no tough questions for the president.”

Sources say donations did increase after the debate, but then plummeted soon after.

“We can do it without them.”

Biden campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt sought to deny the report.

“That’s not accurate,” she said.

“The first seven days of July were the best start to any campaign month for grassroots fundraising, and many of those were first-time donors,” Hitt added. “As for large donors, some have hit their caps since the debates.”

However, Hitt reportedly did not disclose how many people had reached their donation limit after the debate.

Sources say the campaign believes donors who have left the campaign will return to keep Trump out of the White House, and if they don’t, they are prepared to proceed without them.

“If the big donors don’t show up, we’ll do it without them,” is how sources characterize the campaign.

“I don’t know what movie is playing.”

Donors are also finding it harder to reach out to their networks as they question whether Biden will continue in the campaign.

“I can’t reach out to someone because they might say, ‘Oh, I didn’t know, he has dementia,'” a top fundraiser told NBC News. “Right now it’s like someone is asking, ‘Do you want to go see a movie?’ And in this case I’m saying, ‘I don’t know what movie is playing.'”

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign reported that its donation site was inundated with requests for donations after Trump was convicted on 34 charges related to hush money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels, causing it to crash.

The company later announced that it had raised more than $53 million within 24 hours of the guilty verdict.

In July, the Trump campaign report Donations in the second quarter were $331 million, but the Biden campaign reported only $264 million in contributions.
