The multitalented Taraji P. Henson has always been impressive in many ways, and she’s even more impressive now as she reminds us all of what really matters during this crucial presidential election moment.
Here’s the thing: Regardless of what you thought of the first debate between Biden and Trump, one thing hasn’t changed: the stakes in this election.
Henson paused midway through the debate to speak directly to angry and disillusioned voters.BET Awards on July 1He sent a message directly to the camera: “Stay home this fall and vote, because the stakes are so high.”
Please vote. Project 2025A terrifying far-right blueprint for a second Trump administration,Not a game.”
Her warning was effectively spread.People flocked to GoogleSearch for “Project 2025”
AnnA flood of news reportsThere’s been a lot of discussion about the 2025 Plan, some of which I know is directly attributable to Henson, and the Heritage Foundation’s dystopian vision for the future of America. Now onlineHe had been hiding in plain sight for several months.
It’s also a welcome contrast to the post-debate media coverage. The relentless focus on President Biden’s healthMeanwhile, they pay little attention to Donald Trump’s lies, insults and contradictions.
“Black Job”Anyone?
Trump’s latest idiocystatementThat he “knows nothing about Project 2025” and “has no idea who is behind it” is no laughing matter, because many people who were in his previous administration, or who are expected to be in his second administration,Involved in writing.
Moreover, the Heritage FoundationSponsorTrump is due to accept the party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention next week.
And as Henson so persuasively puts it, Heritage920 pages of blueprintsIt’s not a game.
I’ve written before about just how frightening Project 2025 is: it’s far-reaching, monstrous, and gives Trump free rein to persecute a vast and ever-growing list of enemies.
This plan would give an authoritarian president virtually unlimited power by mass laying off civil servants and abolishing an independent Department of Justice, and would entrench far-right, Christian nationalist, and “biblical” worldviews as the foundation of our laws and policies.
The danger to everyday American life and to our democracy isendlessReproductive freedom, religious freedom, freedom of speech, the environment, racial equality, health care, Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, education, the courts.
The court is particularly noteworthy because we saw what a Supreme Court made up of Trump justices could accomplish, ruling on its final day in office that gives a former president like Trump unprecedented legal immunity for actions taken while in office.
That’s exactly what Trump needed.Avoid risksHe could face trial in federal court on election interference charges before the next election.
And this is on top of a Supreme Court ruling that gutted long-standing precedent and turned society upside down.abortion,Affirmative ActionAnd thatFederal Agency CapabilitiesTo protect your health, safety and rights.
It’s no exaggeration to say that who nominates the next Supreme Court justice and other federal judges is one of the biggest issues in this year’s presidential election. We cannot risk giving that power to Trump again.
I believe it is important for the Biden team to discuss what to do next. That is the sign of a healthy democracy and a healthy political party. Unlike a cult where everyone marches in lockstep, a healthy organization holds open debate and reaches consensus.
But the bottom line is that we will be choosing two nominees for president and vice president in November, and while the differences in vision couldn’t be starker, the stakes remain clear.
Do you want a democracy that creates more opportunity for all, or a greedy, authoritarian theocracy that focuses on dangerous grievances?
There is no room for argument.
