A Nebraska foster parent has been arrested in the death of a 5-year-old child who was left unattended in an SUV for an extended period of time, police said.
Juanita Pinon, 40, is charged with child neglect resulting in death in the incident that reportedly happened in Omaha on Wednesday, according to Omaha Police.
“Omaha Police received a call at approximately 5:11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, to 3025 N 93rd Street for a report of an unresponsive child,” police said in a statement. “The 5-year-old child was found inside the vehicle and transported by paramedics to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
“At this time it appears the child was left unattended in the vehicle for an extended period of time,” police added.

Temperatures in Omaha reached a maximum of 86 degrees on Wednesday, the day before the child was found, according to the Associated Press.
This was the 10th fatality caused by high temperature in a car in the United States this year, according to data from Kids and Car Safety.

The previous day, a 2-year-old girl died after being left alone in a car in Marana, Arizona, just outside Tucson.
“Initial information indicates the 2-year-old girl’s father returned home while she was asleep in her car. He parked the car in the garage and left the engine running, leaving the child inside with the air conditioning on,” the Marana Police Department said.
“The perpetrator then entered the residence. The mother was not initially at home, but shortly after arriving the child was discovered inside the vehicle, which was no longer running and the air conditioning was off,” police added.

The high temperature in Marana on Tuesday was 111 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Fox10 Phoenix.
